Childrens Services Collection Information

All books in the Children’s Area are free to borrow and are issued for 4 weeks.

Junior Fiction (JFIC)

Chapter books make up this area and are suitable for around Year 3 and up. The books are arranged alphabetically by the author's surname, with coloured spots on the spine to denote the different subjects such as: animal, fantasy, ghost/horror, historical, humour, mystery/adventure, science fiction and sport.

NZ Fiction (JFIC NZ)

Chapter books that are written by a New Zealand author. They are shelved in a separate area to the Junior Fiction.

Large Print (JLP)

Fiction and non-fiction books with text in large size font. Extra copies of popular authors like Jacqueline Wilson can also be found in this area.

Shorts (JFIC/Short)

Quick read fiction books with one story around 70 pages in length with lots of illustrations and not much text. These have a yellow stripe to show they are Shorts.

Short Story (JFIC/SS)

A selection of short stories together in one book. They are in a separate area and have a green spot on their spine.

Young Adult Fiction (JYAF)

A collection of fiction books with content appealing more to eleven years and older. Books may have a high reading ability. The books are arranged alphabetically by the author's surname with coloured spots on the spine to denote the different subjects such as: animal, fantasy, ghost/horror, historical, humour mystery/adventure, science fiction and sport.

Easy Fiction (JFIC/Easy)

A fiction collection for children who are just learning to read through to Year 4. The books have simple vocabulary, large style print and short or no chapters. There is a little overlap with the top reading level in the Emergent Readers Collection with the lower reading level of the Easy Fiction Collection. These have a large yellow spot.

Emergent Readers (JER)

Readers for children starting to learn to read. There is a wide range from one word each page through to paragraphs and harder vocabulary. Fiction, non-fiction and phonics type readers as well as some in Te Reo Maori.

Picture Books (JPIC)

Books with lots of illustrations, usually limited to 32 pages with both fiction and non-fiction topics covered. They are arranged by the author's last name except for TV characters eg: Tractor Tom at 'T'. They are suitable for preschool to around 10 years. There is a separate Te Reo section in the Picture Book area.

Picture Books for Older Readers (JPIC/Older)

The stories, themes and information are older and more suited to 8 years and over. Arranged by the author's last name. These have a penguin sticker.

Story Collection (JSTO)

Books that are a collection of picture book stories or fiction stories with lots of illustrations that would be suitable as a bedtime story.

Board Books (JPIC/Board)

Picture books that suitable for children aged 0-3 years. The books mainly have cardboard pages with simple texts and concepts.

Te Reo Maori

Emergent Readers, Picture Books and Junior Fiction all have a separate section within them in Te Reo Maori.

Graphix (JFIC/Large G)

Comic style fiction and non-fiction books, in our Young Adult and Fiction areas.

Magazines (JMAG)

Magazines supply up to date information for interest and to provide popular reading for children and teenagers.

Junior Non-fiction (JNF)

This collection provides a range of high interest, current, and topical books. Aimed at covering leisure-time interests and informational needs, this collection also helps to support topics included in the school curriculum.

Stack (JSTACK)

These books are well-loved or a multiple copy item that is kept in a staff area. Please ask at the Desk to borrow these books.

Parent's Collection (JPAR)

A collection of books and resources for parents, covering a broad range of topics including : pregnancy, child health and development, literacy, diet, and many other subjects that deal with raising a family. This collection also includes parenting magazines such as Little Treasures, Family Life, Parenting and Tots to Teens.

Books on CD and Tape (JSW)

Instead of reading a story for a change, why not listen to one. The Children's Library has a wide-ranging collection on tape or CD, with some accompanied by read-along books.

Puzzles and Games (JPUZ & JGAM)

We have a range of puzzles which includes, floor, wooden, and foam which range in pieces from 4 - 200. Various games are supplied which teach basic skills and pre Maths skills.

CD-ROMs (JCDR)

CD-ROM's are issued for 1 week at a cost of $2.50 The Children's Library has a fantastic collection of CD-ROM's, that includes educational and entertainment games, and those based on recent movies or television programmes.

DVDs and Videos (JDVD & JVID)

DVD's are issued for 1 week at a cost of $2.50 Video's are issued for 2 weeks at a cost of $2.50 The Children's Library has a wide-ranging collection of DVD's and Video's. The collections include either contemporary and classic children's films or television programmes.

Music CDs and Tapes (JCD & JCAS)

CD's are issued for 4 weeks at a cost of $1.00 Tapes are issued for 4 weeks at no charge. Come and see the Children's Library's wide-ranging collection of music CD's and Tapes. The collection has a mixture of traditional, classic and popular music or songs.

PlayStation Games (JPS)

PlayStation games are issued for 1 week at a cost of $2.50 The Children's Library has a small but growing collection of PlayStation games, that includes entertainment games, and those based on recent movies or television programmes.
