Youth Week 2012 - Love the skin you're in!

This year we are encouraging youth around New Zealand to embrace their individality and enjoy who they are. This week is all about being happy and proud of who you are, and what you bring to society. Engage in the activities you love. Be true to yourself, and to others. Lift your head high and showcase your talents. Be positive. Take care of yourself. Reach out and encourage others to reach out. Support your friends. Stay healthy. Celebrate who you are, there is only one YOU. Live like you are a legend!

We at the library are celebrating with a photography competition. If you are interested in sending us a photo that represents 'Love the skin you're in, love the life you are living', then we would love to have it. Details and entry form on our Teen page.

This Friday, here at your public library we are celebrating Towel Day. Don't know what Towel day is? Don't Panic!

Towel day was created to commemorate the life and works of author Douglas Adams. You may know him as the author of the famous Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy trilogy in five parts.

I know you are asking what a towel has got to do with anything. Well… “A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitch hiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost". What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with."— Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

So come into the library, get some of Douglas Adams' books and see your librarians wearing the "most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have" a towel.

A fantastic programme designed for parents and babies aged 0-2 years, great one-on-one time with your wee one. Session also runs on Friday morning at 11.30am, and Friday afternoons beginning at 1.30pm. Please note that Wriggle and Rhyme programmes do not run during school holidays.
