Joining the library is simple. If you are an adult (18 years and over), when you come in to collect your library card we need to see photo identification such as a driver's licence, and proof of address. Child registrations must be completed by a parent or legal guardian who is already a member, or who can provide the same proof of identity listed above.

Registration can be completed online, but please make sure you have read our terms and conditions before you register.  You will find the link to the registration form at the bottom of that page.  Please note that by continuing with the registration process you will be deemed to have accepted our terms and conditions.

Library membership is free to residents of the Invercargill City Council area, and free reciprocal membership is available to residents in the following areas:

  • Waitaki District Council
  • Clutha District Council
  • Gore District Council
  • Southland District Council
  • Dunedin City Council
  • Queenstown Lakes District Council
  • Central Otago District Council

If you are out of the Invercargill City area and cannot get in to see us, you can register by downloading our registration form.  Simply print it out, fill it in and send it back to us with photocopies of your photo identification and your proof of address to Invercargill City Libraries, Private Bag 90111, Invercargill 9810.

If you are a short-term visitor to the city or region, we can provide other forms of temporary membership.

Please come in and ask at a help desk, call us on (03) 211 1444, or send us a message.
