The challenge is to build a structure from Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga’s listed buildings within Southland using either Lego or Minecraft. You can find the list of structures at heritage.org.nz/places.
The Southland Heritage Month Lego/Minecraft Competition runs from Monday 15 December 2025 to 15 February 2026 inclusive. Entries close 15 February 5pm. Late entries will not be entered into the competition.
Entrants will be judged within three categories: Up to 9 years, 10-15 years, and 16+ years. Entrants are responsible for selecting their appropriate category.
All entries must be submitted online. If you have no internet access but would still like to enter, please email SubmissionsOS@heritage.org.nz. We will be accepting images or videos of your creations. All entries must be a listed structure/place within the Southland Region on the Rārangi Kōrero New Zealand Heritage List.
All entries must be original to the person on the entry form. Each person can submit a maximum of 5 photographs.
By entering this competition, you allow Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga a license to reproduce your image/s with attribution on our websites and social channels, and to allow Libraries in Southland, including, but not limited to, Invercargill City Libraries and Archives, and Heritage South to display the image/s as part of Southland Heritage Month, March 2026.
Entries will be judged anonymously by the selected judges.
The decision of the judges is final, and no correspondence will be entered into. Immediate family members and close personal friends of the judges are not eligible to enter the competition.
Winning entrants will be selected and informed by 25 February 2026. Winners will be publicly announced at a prizegiving as part of the opening event for Southland Heritage Month, held on Sunday March 1st, 1:30pm in the Meeting Room, First Floor, Invercargill Public Library, 50 Dee Street, Invercargill.
All entries will be displayed on the Ground Floor at the Invercargill Public Library for duration of Southland Heritage Month in March and at other libraries in Southland by arrangement.
