Family Tree Project Competition
Discover your roots – every family has a story
During Family History Month this August, we're running a family tree competition and inviting you to celebrate your family history, your people and the stories that make you unique.
This competition will run from 1 August to 13 September.
When you are ready to enter, print the entry form below and bring it into the library with your creation.
Who can enter?
There are three age categories:
- Children (age 0-11)
- Teens (age 12-18)
- Adults (age 18+)
What do I need to create?
Create one family tree that shows your family connections.
The project must include at least three generations and be no smaller than A3 size.
What should my tree include?
- Your name
- At least three generations (parents/caregivers/grandparents) and be no smaller than A3 size
- Important things connected to your family (for example, places, traditions or memorable events)
- At least three facts or stories about your family.
- Pictures or artwork
Extra things you can include
Add these to your family tree for bonus points:
- A journey your family made
- More generations (if information is available)
- A cultural connection
- A family achievement
- An interesting job or hobby
- A favourite family recipe
- A memorable event
- Family photos (if available)
- Drawings
- Maps
- Decorations
How will entries be judged?
Judges will look at:
- Research and family information - How much you discovered about your family.
- Creativity and design – How unique and interesting your project looks.
- Family stories – How well you share your family's journey.
- Presentation – How clear, neat and engaging your project is.
Prizes
Prizes will be awarded in mid-September.
Each first-place winner will receive a $50 Whitcoulls voucher.
The second-place adult winner will receive 10 paid-item library vouchers (worth $30), and the third-place adult winner will receive 5 paid-item library vouchers (worth $15).
Children and teen runner ups will receive mystery prizes.
Be creative!
Your family tree does not have to look like a normal tree - let your family story inspire your design.
You could design it as a native New Zealand tree, a map showing your family journey, a storybook, a cultural design, a colourful artwork, or a tree made from handprints or drawings.
Important Notes
- Every family is different and every family story matters. Your project might include whānau, blended families, adoptive families, and any people who are important to you. The project should include at least three generations and be no smaller than A3 size
- Please make sure you only include information and photographs that you are comfortable sharing publicly. Ask permission from family members before including their personal stories or photos.
- All completed entries will be displayed at the library after the competition to celebrate the unique stories, histories, and connections of our community. By entering the project, participants give permission for their poster to be displayed in the library for visitors to enjoy. This is a wonderful opportunity to share your family's journey and inspire others to discover their own roots.
- Entries close on Thursday 13 September 2026.
- Please print the entry form and attach it to your family tree when you deliver it to the library.
